POWER WORDS
Power Words Inspired by Jasper Johns Choose a descriptive ACTION WORD. That captures the essence of who you are, what you value, and what you are about. Your word needs to be at least 5 letters long.
For my POWER WORD, I chose LEARN because it is central to everything I do as an artist, teacher, and person. I want to examine everything that comes my way and have it positively affect everything else I do.
Some other examples:
Embrace, defend, create, motivate, tolerate, survive, teach, inspire
With this POWER WORD, you will create an experimental art piece inspired by the work of Jasper Johns.
Jasper Johns was an ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST who created a series of number paintings in a loose, gestural style. An example of his work is attached. Each painting was different and experimented with different color palettes, line quality, and media.
Abstract Expressionism: This is a type of experimental, non-representational(this means that it doesn't necessarily look like anything) art work. The movement started in the 1940s. The style is characteristically LOOSE and SPONTANEOUS. Abstract Expressionist paintings were typically very large.
The Process:
Step 1. Use a pencil to LIGHTLY create a border around the edge of your paper. Do NOT use a ruler. Use loose, gestural lines.
Step 2. Use a pencil to write your POWER WORD letter by letter—one on top of another. Each letter should touch the top and bottom or left and right of your border. Use loose, gestural lines.
Step 3. Choose a color palette than compliments your POWER WORD. For example, EMBRACE might best be expressed using soft, warm colors. MOTIVATE might best be expressed using bold lines and bright colors.
Step 4. Apply your media as follows:
One letter must be loosely outlined in white oil pastel
One letter must be loosely outlined in oil pastel of another color
One letter must be loosely outlined in colored pencil
One letter must be loosely outlined in colored pencil of another color
One letter must be loosely outlined in marker
One letter must be loosely outlined in crayon
If you have a short word, choose from the above list. If you have a long word, the remaining letters can be outlined in your choice of media.
Step 4. Fill in some areas. Use oil pastel or crayon or marker to loosely fill in some areas of your choice.
Step 5. Use India Ink to loosely outline all of your letters again.
Step 6. Use watercolor paint to fill in the remaining areas. You MUST use at least 5 different values of the same color.
